The launch of ChatGPT has sparked a wave of excitement around generative artificial intelligence (AI)’s potential. In its first two months, the product grew to 100 million users globally, making it the fastest-growing consumer product in history. According to Pitchbook estimates, the market for generative AI will reach $98.1 billion by 2026.

But what exactly is generative AI, ChatGPT, and why is it all gaining popularity now?

Generative AI is a field of artificial intelligence that enables machines to create original content, such as text and images. For example, a generative AI system could take an initial photo of a face and generate changes the user might want to make. It could take in a voice recording of a person speaking, analyze it and generate a new video that accurately lip-syncs the words being spoken.

Now, how does ChatGPT fit into the picture?

ChatGPT is an AI that can understand the context and intent behind user questions or statements, generating an appropriate response in a text-based format. ChatGPT can be integrated into chatbots, websites, or mobile applications to provide instant and automated responses for users. To generate a response, ChatGPT uses a process called “language modeling”. Language modeling predicts the likelihood of the next word in a sequence of words. Apple’s messaging app, iMessage’s Predictive Text is an example of language modeling for a smartphone keyboard.

Generative AI and the travel industry

Today, travel providers are using ChatGPT to enhance the customer experience. The travel industry is embracing generative AI technology like ChatGPT to create personalized itineraries and offer conversational customer interactions. As consumers continue to demand more personalized service from companies, companies are likely to turn to AI technologies like ChatGPT.

Many large travel companies have integrated a natural language processing technology from OpenAI into their platforms to enhance the travel booking experience for their users. For example Kayak uses the GPT-3 model from OpenAI to understand and interpret user’s queries in natural language and generate relevant, personalized responses. Air India has partnered with OpenAI to improve and streamline its operations using ChatGPT, with plans to use it for customer service, booking management, and flight operations.

Expedia is exploring the use of ChatGPT to personalize recommendations and interact with customers in a more conversational manner. They have integrated OpenAI’s language model into its customer service chatbot, which can answer common customer inquiries and assist with booking and travel-related questions. The language model is used to generate human-like responses that can interpret the meaning and intent behind user queries and provide accurate and helpful information.

Impact of Generative AI in Travel

The use of generative AI can help businesses across many industries, including the travel industry, save time and money. Travel businesses can use this type of AI to perform administrative and customer service tasks. This can free up time for workers to focus on tasks that require human analysis and emotional intelligence.

Generative AI also enables travel companies to better collect and use data by automating various processes and providing insights into customer behavior and preferences. By leveraging generative AI technologies, companies can streamline their operations and provide highly personalized experiences that meet the evolving needs of today’s travelers.

The integration of generative AI into the travel industry has improved efficiency, but there’s still a ways to go before generative AI can plan a seamless trip for you. In the future, we can expect to continue to explore AI technologies that will make travel easier. I personally look forward to watching how this space evolves and how we will continue to transform travel experiences for travelers.
